An Intimate Evening with Singer/Songwriter Terri Allard
Please join us for a live acoustic performance by acclaimed singer, songwriter Terri Allard, a hometown girl who continues to make good as the host of Charlottesville Inside Out on PBS Station WHTJ. Proceeds and donations will support the Arts Center In Orange Community Outreach Program, a cultural initiative with the goal of making the arts accessible to underserved audiences throughout Orange and the surrounding counties.
“Choosing love, choosing hope, celebrating those choices through life’s twists and turns: Terri Allard’s music looks at the hard and true things of life, celebrating the joys, laughing at the funny stuff, walking with the sorrow, and speaking of it all with a clear hearted grace. She’s been called too folk for country and too country for folk: what she is, really is a writer and singer of remarkable insight and focus.” Kerry Dexter, Music Road

The Arts Center In Orange (501c3) Community Outreach develops programs with area schools and social service agencies with the goal of bringing the arts to everyone regardless of age, ability and/or economic circumstance.
In 2002 The Arts Center In Orange began a program of twice monthly art lessons at an area nursing home. In 2003 we received $12,500 in grants funding to expand our Community Outreach activities and hired Anna Marie DeMio Dowen to head the program. With the generous support of the Virginia Commission for the Arts, the Dominion Foundation, the Target Foundation, Bama Works, the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation, several private family foundations, and the talents of many of our community’s fine artists and musicians, the program has grown to serve Orange County schools and over 24 area social service agencies, bringing art and music into the lives of thousands of underserved individuals throughout our community.
A few examples of The Arts Center’s Community Outreach programming include:
- Resources and artistic support to Orange County Schools, such as Young Visions, the annual gallery exhibit of Orange County School student’s art work in our Morin Gallery, in-school artist residencies, after-school enrichment, student behavioral incentives, clay studio facilities, and in-service teacher training.
- Arts curriculum tailored to the creative and developmental needs of low-income youth at Orange County Head Start and The Boys and Girls Club of Orange, including regular classes in arts and traditional crafts, annual art shows and opportunities for young artists to fundraise for their non-profit through the sale of their own artwork.
- Through programs at Dogwood Village of Orange, the Young at Heart Club and Orange Senior Center, area seniors participate in art classes, exhibit and win ribbons at the Orange County Fair and at the Virginia House of Delegates.
- Mentally disabled adults at facilities in Orange and Culpeper enjoy opportunities to step outside the limits of their situation to sing, dance and create.
Through the arts, we have a unique ability to coordinate and enhance the missions of organizations throughout our community. One example: Outreach instructors presented an after-school enrichment program titled “The Art of Giving” to produce ceramic butterfly wind chimes to be auctioned at the Hospice of the Piedmont’s annual Butterfly Release. This single activity supported Virginia SOL requirements, educated and empowered children as philanthropists, and helped to raise funds for Hospice.
